Kids Birthday Gift Ideas

Do you have a month of the year that is jam packed with birthday parties? August is that month for us. We had three kids parties this past weekend and have a total of 7 parties for 9 kids during August. All of these parties plus an early September birthday in our house has me thinking A LOT about kids birthday presents!

IMG_3997.JPG

With three of our own kids, family friends, cousins and school friends the amount of birthdays that we will celebrate in the coming years is a tad overwhelming...especially when they hit all at the same time! I've been trying to figure out a way to simplify the process while still feeling like we're maintaining a budget and gifting dear friends and family something personalized. I definitely haven't mastered anything but if you're interested...read on for my TAKE.

My secret to staying sane when it comes to gifting birthday gifts, is a simple one. I do two things really; stock up on presents in advance and select an annual gender (or unisex) based gift for school friends. By doing both of these things I always have something on hand and I'm able to avoid the last minute scramble for a gift.

When stocking up on gifts I try not to purchase too many as I certainly don't want an excess of anything and storage in my home is limited! My general rule of thumb is to have no more than five in my closet at one time. Some of my current favorite gifts per age group in a variety of price ranges are listed below - I hope they are helpful!

Toddler Gifts (1.5 - 3yrs)

Preschool Gifts (2.5-5yrs)

Primary School Gifts (5-9)

Tweens

When it comes to all of those birthday parties don't forget to keep wrapping paper on hand! Home Goods is a great source for inexpensive yet adorable paper, gift bags and cards. If I don't have a chance to get to Home Goods I always have brown kraft paper and brown kraft paper bags at home so the kids can decorate the paper and sign their name; eliminating the need for an additional birthday card.

Happy Gift Buying!

One In A Melon Gift Ideas

We're heading to a "One In A Melon" first birthday party this weekend and I couldn't be more excited to celebrate. I am in love with this watermelon birthday theme! Watermelon is hands down my favorite fruit (ok, so it's only competition is apples) but really there is nothing as delicious as a ripe watermelon in the summer. My own mother has long been a fan of watermelon everything so I've been dressing my daughters in watermelon apparel since they were babes. So while watermelon continues to be en vogue I thought I would share some of my current favorite watermelon products. I've broken the products down into categories to make it easier to peruse my TAKE on the Watermelon trend and maybe you'll discover the perfect gift for the watermelon lover in your life!

End-of-Year Teacher Gifts

We've all been there. There are only a few days left of the school year and you've forgot to get something for your child's teacher. It's not just the teacher these days but also the assistant teacher, the after care director and the speech therapist...(insert number of children here) and multiply! Coordinating end-of-year gifts is a lot of work! It's time consuming and overwhelming but teachers give selflessly to our children and they deserve something special. I'm lucky that there is often a room parent that coordinates a generous group gift but if you're like me and want to give something extra read on for my TAKE on an idea for end-of-year teacher gifts.

Each year I try to simplify things and stick with one teacher gift idea for all recipients. During the holidays we bake our favorite Rosemary Cashew recipe (post here) but I wanted to try something new for end-of-year gifts. Last summer I was really into the blog 100 Days of Real Food so this year I decided on baking and gifting their Homemade Granola along with a gift card. I know some feel it's impersonal but I love a gift card and I find that baking is an easy way to involve my kids in the gift experience.

The Homemade Granola from 100 Days of Real Food is delicious, super easy to bake and can be made into bars or used as cereal. The granola can also last for 2 weeks in an air tight container so it's easy to bake ahead of time. I packaged in cellophane bags, included a gift card for each teacher, tied with some grosgrain ribbon and added the gift tag that can be found in my Highlights on Instagram. The granola would also look great packaged in a coffee mug or a decorative container.

If Homemade Granola isn't your thing don't fret. Be sure to check out the blog DoSayGive. Lee, has wonderful ideas and just posted an entire section of 2018 Teacher Gift ideas that is sure to solve your gifting woes. She even has a post on appropriate Teacher Gift Etiquette. I hope I stack up! Happy Teacher Gifting and Happy Summer!

Easter Basket Bonanza

Next to Christmas, Easter is my favorite holiday. I've been thinking about why and I think it comes down to family traditions. Growing up Easter was often celebrated in sunny Florida. It involved dying eggs, a new dress, Easter baskets, showing up late for church and of course, hunting for the Golden Egg. I'm a bit of a fanatic for a Golden Egg hunt...still as an adult! With children of my own, we have adapted many of the same traditions and while, we won't be in Florida this year I still delight in dying eggs, dressing them up in their Sunday best and making Easter baskets.

Read along for my TAKE on Easter baskets for the baby girl, toddler boy and the six-year-old girl in my life. Hopefully, some of the ideas can help you build baskets for the children in your lives. Happy Easter!

Maggie's Basket - 11 months

It's true Maggie doesn't necessarily need an Easter basket but matching Bunny felt bags (aka basket) the softest matching pajamas, bunny ears, a new book and Jellycat lovie are things that I find very hard to pass up. Plus I can never have a re-do on her first Easter!

Baby Girl Basket Goodies

George's Basket - 3.5 years old

I truly think shopping for my son can be just as fun as shopping for my girls. There are so many darling toys and apparel available these days. Most years Easter overlaps with our Spring Break so we are sometimes in Florida and I tend to always include new spring/summer shoes, new swim trunks and beach or pool toys. This way I can fill their baskets with practical items too! One practical item new to the mix this year is an oscillating toothbrush...we may get a few eye rolls with this one but at least it will help to remove those sugar bugs!

Lucy's Basket - 6 years old

Do you have a gift drawer or closet in your home? I have a few storage containers with goodies which helps my Easter basket supply. I like to get a lot of items on sale (hello J Crew Factory Sales and Target clearance aisles) where possible too which helps save me time and money when there are 3 kids in the mix! Some years we have scaled back at Christmas and done bigger gifts at Easter such as bikes or scooters...something that is more appropriate for warmer temps. This helps spread out the love especially for Lucy whose birthday is six days before Christmas.

Candy

I add a few candy items into their Easter baskets but the majority of candy goes into the plastic eggs for an egg hunt. Jelly beans and chocolate bunnies are probably the only classic Easter candy "must haves" in my opinion. I'm not a fan of Peeps so I never add those and let's be honest, I often eat a bit of the candy prior to the holiday so I make sure to buy items I like! I love gummy candy and so do my kids - Paper Source sells the most fabulous gummy kebabs for practically every holiday. Your pediatric dentist will not approve but your kids will!

Non-Candy Treat

My favorite non-candy treat is to make carrot shaped cellophane bags full of Pepperidge Farm, cheddar Goldfish Crackers. It's so simple and always an adorable addition to the baskets. I often make and give away to friends children as well. This would also work for Annie's Cheddar Bunnies or even orange jelly beans if you wanted a sweet option.

Gift Ideas for Bebe

There is little in life that I love more than holding a newborn baby...it's pure heaven. Although for me, selecting baby gifts is a close second. I absolutely love to buy gifts but ESPECIALLY baby gifts. I truly love taking the time to collect gift items that are fun, practical, resonate with the recipient and are often personalized. I'm so excited to send this gift off to a family who has been waiting for their baby boy for a long time!

IMG_0374.JPG

One of my favorite part of gifting is the "vehicle" in which you put the gift. This particular gift idea is for a newborn baby and my latest obsession is using the kraft paper colored Spritz boxes from Target. However, if the gift is for a shower I often use different gifting vehicles such as an LL Bean tote, a toy or storage basket, a set of suitcases, a backpack or even a bathtub. The options are limitless and oh so much fun!

The majority of the time I try to personalize the gift in some way. For this gift, I got my my kids involved by having them hand paint the wooden letter "O" that will placed on top of top of the box. I will literally come up with any activity to keep my kids busy in the winter! When I can I try to incorporate a theme. For this animal loving family - you'll notice a handful of appropriately themed items.

Read on for my current TAKE on a baby gift. From Left to Right:

When possible I try to give something for the baby to wear now and later as evident with the smaller sized onesie and the Baby Gap outfit appropriate for the fall. I always try to include gift receipts as I never know if I'm sending a duplicate and that way it makes it easier on the parents to make a return or exchange. Dependent on how much you want to spend some of my other current favorites are: wooden rattles from Bannor Toys, wooden blocks from Uncle Goose, teethers and pacifier clips from Loulou LOLLIPOP, infant layette from Kissy Kissy and muslin swaddle blankets from Little Unicorn

Seriously, I love to buy gifts and hopefully my ideas will be helpful when shopping for someone in your life.
