Kate's Monthly Take - April 2020

The days are all blending together at this point and we’re settling into some sort of new normal. The kids have surprised us with their adaptability, understanding and their willingness to continue their learnings, albeit, remotely. In their free time they’ve been reading, playing with classic LEGO bricks and making up pretend games where they act as doctors or super heroes trying to rid the world of the big bad virus.

Myself, on the other hand, often think about adapting a growth mindset during these times but for the most part have become a bit of a walking zombie and end up sleeping in my clothes most nights. Most of my time is spent planning meals, acting as tech support for the kids and all of their virtual classroom meets, thinking about but not actually folding the laundry and incessantly vacuuming. The vacuuming bit isn’t new…I always did that so at least some things haven’t changed.

Despite all this I know we’re quite privileged to be able to stay home and we will continue to do so in support of our states and country’s efforts to flatten the curve. Even if it’s quite a ways off, I am hopeful, that we will get back to where we once were and when we do life will be a little bit sweeter. In the meantime, I still have the same hopes and dreams that I did a couple of months ago - I still love books, new recipes, music, clothes, traveling and sharing it with you.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - April 2020

Mood

  • Some days, doing ‘the best we can’ may still fall short of what we would like to be able to do, but life isn’t perfect on any front - and doing what we can with what we have is the most we should expect of ourselves or anyone else. - Mister Rogers

Currently Coveting

  • Self care may have gone to the wayside but it doesn’t mean that I’m not coveting a few self care items…you know to freshen up my lewk when I leave the house again. I am the worst at painting my own nails (actually, anyone’s nails) so I’m really intrigued by this Mani Bootcamp Box by Olive & June. It might just make the perfect Mother’s Day gift…because I can guarantee that we all need some pampering this year - even if it’s just some alone time doing our nails.

Currently Coveting Kids Edition

  • My youngest is about to turn three and is growing like a weed. With the warmer temps this weekend I have been eyeing some Spring jackets and I just can’t resist a quilted version. This blue and white floral quilted jacket makes me so happy.

Favorite Product

  • We made a rainbow heart on our door earlier this week and this set of Crayola pre cut construction shapes has hearts in every color and saved us so much time. I’m a fan of anything that can make me a bit more efficient and the kids love these for making collages and homemade cards. Honestly, I’m so grateful for all of the art and craft items I have been collecting over the years. They have been put to great use!

Design Pick

  • Have y’all heard the term “Granny Chic”? It’s most likely just a marketing design term but for me it makes me think of whimsy, color and needlepoint. I wish I had taken up embroidery or needlepoint so that I could be doing it to pass some of the time (not that I have much alone or free time) it would just be nice to work with my hands and create something. On the top of that list would be to stitch the Ecto-1 Ghostbusters car for my son. I would 100% frame it and style it on a bookshelf.

What I'm Reading

  • If you’re after a bit of escapism via a book, The Last Romantics has kept me engaged for the last week. The writing is incredibly fluid and the characters are captivating.

What I’m Listening To

  • We are listening to a lot of the Trolls World Tour Soundtrack right now. It might now always be my top pick but there are some mash ups that have been helping us all release some pent up energy.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • The kids are reading a lot of books these days as I’m sure yours are too! We’ve been organizing our book shelves and thankfully, uncovered some gems we had forgotten about.

    • My 8 year old is focusing on a daily reading log which is mostly filled up with details about her current favorite, Mrs. Rapscot’s Girls.

    • My 5 year old asks to read We Don’t Eat Our Classmates at least five times a week, he almost has all the lines memorized.

    • The youngest is about to turn three and she loves Eloise. Don’t get me wrong, I love Eloise too but when someone requests it every night for a month it gets a bit old! It’s also quite long so I often try and skip a few sentences but she catches me almost every time!

What I’m Watching

  • I have no self control when it comes to binge watching television shows. If the show is on Netflix or Amazon I will watch an entire season in one night and stay up way too late. I’m trying to avoid this as it sets me up for little patience the next day. So I’ve been watching a few shows in real time aka watching one episode a week. Homeland, Outlander, Belgravia and World on Fire have currently been capturing my attention.

Instagram Handle

  • I’ve been discovering a lot of new artists this past month and Sam Sidney and her felt portraits have completely captivated me! Her take on popular musicians are some of my favorites. You can order commissions too!

Guilty Pleasure

  • I still love to online shop but for better or for worse there has been a lot of shopping cart abandonment these days. Sometimes putting something in my cart is just as satisfying as making that purchase.

I Need A Vacation

  • I have so many places I still want to travel to and it makes me sad to lose this time but if I could pick right now I think it might be want to go somewhere remote. Some sort of cabin on a lake in Canada or in Montana…someplace with a large meadow where my kids could just run around and be free and I wouldn’t have to worry about them staying 6 feet apart from other people. It sounds quite lovely right about now.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - Since quarantine started we’ve been cooking up all of our favorite recipes for breakfast, dinner and in between. The kids have been wanting to get more involved in the kitchen (for better or for worse) and their favorite way to do so is by helping us bake. We just tried this new Peanut Butter & Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe from Food 52. These squelched all of our cravings and I might I suggest you serve with a glass of milk.

Kate's Monthly Take - March 2020

I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels this way but March 2020 will be one I never forget…the entire year for that matter but this month is the month that life as we knew it came to a halt. As a family we had so many hopes, dreams and events to look forward to this year that I fear will not come to pass (at least this year). I’m trying not to dwell on this and the uncertainty many of us feel as we have much to be grateful for and should ideally take this time to reset.

We will have new dreams now and things will get better but they will be different and it’s going to take some time and will not be without effort. In an effort to retain some normalcy and continuity in my life or maybe it’s just control… I’m attempting to still write and share my thoughts. So if this feels insensitive that is not my intention and understand that we all deal with challenges in different ways and my solace is often found within routine…so continuing on with my Monthly Take post is what I’m going to do.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - March 2020

Mood

  • We’re going through a lot right now but finding things to be grateful for is important here are three of mine…my family, our working dishwasher and the collective creativity we are witnessing throughout the world.

Currently Coveting

  • A peloton and a dog certainly come to mind but if this was pre quarantine life I would most certainly be lusting after this skirt and this one too!

Currently Coveting Kids Edition

  • As Easter is approaching I can’t help but covet some darling outfits despite the fact, that it will most likely not be warm and they may only be worn in our backyard. I love this blue and white striped Isabel Garreton dress maybe paired with a little boy wearing a tan blazer and shorts. I know my youngest would love this Meri Meri Bunny Straw bag too!

Favorite Product

  • Aside from perhaps Zoom and Google Hangouts that are making quarantine a bit more manageable I wanted to share these Cat & Jack toddler sandals that were our favorites last year. I picked them up last year in the store because they often sell out quickly but they are perfect for our youngest who has a high instep and has a hard time fitting in Natives.

Design Pick

  • I’m loving these new colorful Kitchen Aid commercial grade ranges. Someday in my pretend future home I’d love a navy one to go with a white kitchen with a navy blue island.

What I'm Reading

  • I wish I could say that I’m reading anything for fun right now but I’m not. I did however, enjoy reading American Dirt earlier this month. The story is captivating - I was hooked from the beginning and I’m sure you will be too!

What I’m Listening To

  • My favorite song right now is Robyn’s version of Dancing On My Own. The kids like it too and it helps us all get some energy out especially in our weekly remote dance parties with friends.

What We're Reading the Kids

What I’m Watching

Instagram Handle

  • I’m sure I’ve shared my love for Katie Couric before but right now I appreciate her daily COVID-19 update posts that are a great source of info in one spot. For useful preschool activities and homeschool tips dayswithgrey and theworkspaceforchildren have been valuable resources.

Guilty Pleasure

  • Hiding from my kids in the kitchen or the bathroom or in a closet when I need a minute. If it’s in the kitchen I’m most certainly also digging into some Nutella.

I Need A Vacation

  • I hope we can all travel again very soon, there is so much of the world I’d still like to explore. But spending time with family again or traveling to my favorite spot would be at the very top of my wish list.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - We’ve been cooking a lot these days trying to use all of our fresh and non perishable foods before making additional trips to the store. Some of our favorite recipes have been soups because one are kids will eat them and two they are great for lunch the next day. Our two new recent favorites are as follows: Ina Garten’s Tuscan White Bean Soup and The Modern Proper’s Chicken Tikka Masala Soup.

Kate's Monthly Take - February 2020

This month started with a family trip to Disney World and will end with my husband and I on a beach. Both experiences I’m incredibly grateful for and have been high on our lists of priorities for sometime. In between the time away it’s been a whirlwind with much time spent concerned for the kids health during flu season and obsessively making everyone washes their hands, wipes their noses and takes their vitamins! Here’s hoping you and all of yours, as well as mine remain healthy until Spring rolls around.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - February 2020

Mood

  • Be brave enough to suck at something new…such great advice especially for those of us who get stuck in something that isn’t fulfilling. I think about this is all the time but most of the time I’m not that brave. Maybe someday.

Currently Coveting

  • My husband and I are taking our first trip together in almost 5 years and we’re headed someplace tropical so I’ve been eyeing a few items. I’m just not sure how practical the items are outside of island life so I think I may just splurge on a fun pair of earrings (Coral Martinique Earrings) that I’m sure will be worn again!

Currently Coveting Kids Edition

Favorite Product

  • My hair has grown pretty damaged in the past few years. Three pregnancies and the subsequent hormones have meant that a lot has fallen out and its take a bit of a beating with blow drying and the flat iron. Bottom line is that it isn’t nearly as full as it once was so I’ve been using these Pantene Pro-V Rescue Shots to help strengthen my ends. Extremely easy to apply, love the scent and my split ends are diminishing by the week!

Design Pick

  • Jayson Home has long been my favorite design store in Chicago. Their inventory is constantly changing and always inspiring thanks to some of the best buyers around. The Buyers Section is my favorite section of their website and right now I’m loving these ikat trays.

What I'm Reading

  • Once I become hooked on a show I tend to have a hard time letting of the characters. When shows like Outlander and Poldark are based on fiction I usually start reading the books after watching the shows in hopes of finding more context, omitted scenes etc.... This is especially true this month as I’m currently reading as many books in the Poldark Saga as I can get my hands on. The series on PBS was based on 7 of the 12 books and I’m currently on book three, Jeremy Poldark.

What I’m Listening To

  • Not much new music this month…I’ve really only been listening to Audible and the book, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone. On the days I commute into the office audio books make my commute so much more bearable and this one is incredibly insightful yet entertaining.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • The recent President’s Day holiday spurred our interest in The President of the Jungle and provided a little lesson on the election process as well!

What I’m Watching

  • I have binged quite a few shows in weeks of January and February. Netflix’s Cheer and all five seasons of Poldark were my favorites. In fact, I’m still so obsessed with Poldark and it’s characters that I have started reading the books.

Instagram Handle

  • I love to eat cheese and I love to make a cheese board, so what could be better than watching someone create them? Following ThatCheesePlate is so satisfying for me and Marissa Mullen the handle owner/creator also has coined something called a #salamiriver that I am definitely going to try and re-create someday!

Guilty Pleasure

  • A car wash! The winter months are so hard on cars in Chicago and I get super crazy about checking the weather in order to plan our next car wash. Sure, the kids may destroy the interior the next day but a clean car (inside and out) even for just one day is worth it!

I Need A Vacation

  • The kids Spring Break is coming up at the end of next month and unfortunately, I have a work trip during their week off so we won’t be heading anywhere. However, if we were Jekyll Island, GA and the Jekyll Club would be at the top of my list. I have never been but you can get a direct flight into Jacksonville, FL and drive an hour north to the island, where family friendly fun awaits. Biking, swimming and Driftwood Beach sound like a pretty great family vacation to me!

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - If you’ve been following along on my Instagram you know that we eat a lot of soup in the winter. A couple of weeks ago a friend forwarded me this Lemony Chicken and Orzo soup recipe from Bon Appetit. Within days I had bought the ingredients and my husband whipped it together. Let me tell you this is one of the best chicken soups you will eat in your entire life and the lemon totally makes the dish! It’s lighter than your traditional chicken noodle soup, more complex and just as delicious. My kids ate it so you know it has to be decent!

Kate's Monthly Take - January 2020

It’s halfway through January and I’m finally getting my act together and finding pockets of time for myself and this blog again. I’m always pretty wiped out after the holidays so jumping right into a New Years’ Resolution has never been my thing. On my team at work we set words of the year which was a first. I actually liked the exercise because I can be very goal oriented but need something that isn’t overly specific and will fit in with all aspects of my life. So my word of 2020 is “confident”. Mostly, I chose the word this year because I tend to overthink and second guess my decisions especially when it comes to parenthood. As a family we have some pretty big decisions to make this year and I want to be confident in those and be at peace with the fact that whatever decisions we make will take us on our path and regardless, of which path it is…life will be wrought with blessings and challenges.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - January 2020

Mood

  • A huge piece of life is just doing what you say you’re going to do. I truly believe in this and try to hold myself accountable to this. I don’t have a lot of patience with people who don’t feel the same way about this…maybe the don’t have kids? Because if you tell a child that you’re going to do something…they WILL NEVER forget it!

Currently Coveting

  • We haven’t even really experienced winter yet and I’m already dreaming of warmer temps in which I could wear these railroad striped, slip on Vans. There are a couple warm weather trips in my future so I may just need to order a pair!

Currently Coveting 2.0

  • Adding a new section this month as I always come across a few items for the kids that I obsess over. This month its all about hearts with this glittery dress and heart patterned sweater. Love that the sizes range from toddler to tween so the items could be worn by both my daughters - can’t resist a matching moment!

Favorite Product

  • Ever since having children I have despised wearing an underwire bra and while, I could wear sports bras every day it isn’t really a great look. Finally, I’ve found a bra that is comfortable, supportive and gives some shape.

Design Pick

What I'm Reading

  • I’m a couple of chapters into Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson and I’m loving it. The story line is unique and totally weird - it’s addictive!

What I’m Listening To

  • We’re heading to our first concert of the year shortly and my first concert in the famed Chicago Theatre so I’ve got the Tedeschi Trucks Band albums on repeat. Midnight in Harlem is one of my favorites.

What We're Reading the Kids

What I’m Watching

  • If you loved Downton Abbey on PBS, then Downton Abbey the movie will take you right back. It truly felt like we had never left the characters and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Speaking of PBS is anyone else excited for Sanditon to premiere? It’s apparently based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel…sign me up!

Instagram Handle

  • If you’re a royal fan @eholmes is a great follow especially for her series So Many Thoughts (SMT) about royal fashion. She is an American journalist with a three kids, a lover of headbands and an upcoming book. Sounds like she and I have a few things in common, don’t you think? For many years she wrote about fashion which has parlayed into writing about the influence the British Royal family has on fashion. If you’ve seen the news you’ve most likely been made privy to the announcement from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle so their truly couldn’t be a better time to start following Elizabeth Holmes.

Guilty Pleasure

  • Just before the kids went back to school I pulled an all nighter (literally I did not shut my eyes once) and binge watched all 10 episodes of Netflix’s new ice skating drama, Spinning Out. It’s part I Tonya, part Cutting Edge with mental illness, multiple love interests and a multitude of Hunger Game references thrown in. Sure it was a little bit cheesy but I’ve always loved figure skating…even interviewed Jonny Weir once so this was right up my alley. The no sleep part wasn’t a great idea and I’ve taken two naps this week to try and make up for my poor habits. I’m still leaning towards thinking it was worth it though!

I Need A Vacation

  • On my bucket list for sure is a trip in Europe led by Lauren of Aspiring Kennedy She is an expat living in London and has a lot of experience with travel (she can even be a consultant for your own European adventure) but what I’m most interested in is the ladies only trips. It would of course be fun to go with friends but I think I’d like to go alone in order to have the chance to meet people from different backgrounds, experiences and truly just to have an adult conversation. Spending some time in Europe would be great too!

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - If you’ve been following along here or on Instagram you know that we make soup A LOT in the winter. One of our favorites is this Turkey Sausage, Spinach and White Bean recipe from popular Chicago blogger, Liz Adams. I’m sure the recipe is great as is but we sub a can of diced tomatoes and sometimes tomato sauce for the Roma tomatoes (less chopping) and often use sweet Italian sausage. The recipe makes enough for leftovers and the adults and all the kids eat it!

Kate's Monthly Take - April 2018

I have so much on my to-do list right now - I've been getting a bit overwhelmed and daydreaming about this time last year when I had just started my maternity leave as we anticipated baby number three's arrival. I may be an anomaly, but I wish I could do this past year all over again. It's true what they say - time is a thief! I'm going to have a one year old in a matter of weeks and it's a good reminder for me to not stress about the small stuff, pushback on unnecessary, work and enjoy the present.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - April 2018

Mood

  • Is it Spring yet? Seriously, there was snow on the ground this morning.

Currently Coveting

  • I have a few work trips on the horizon and I always cram my laptop + my kitchen sink into my carry on. I've been eyeing Le Big Sac from Clare V and think it would solve all my carry on packing problems.

Favorite Product

  • Now that our youngest is into eating solid foods we've been a bit more adventurous about dining out. She loves to sit in a high chair and devours pretty much anything we put in front of her. I feel much better using this ezpz silicone Mini Mat when we're out. It suctions to the table so she can't move it around, the mini version fits nicely in my bag and perhaps best of all the mat is dishwasher safe!

Design Pick

  • I can't say I always use them but I'm a huge fan of using actual linens for entertaining especially when it comes to major holidays. With that being said, I'm over the moon for the handwoven linens from Heather Taylor Home and the chic yet slightly understated ways she styles them for entertaining. Honestly, sometimes I wish I lived in California so I could decorate an outdoor dining table on the reg!

What I'm Reading

  • I've been wanting to read the The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin for a while as the premise about siblings visiting a fortuneteller to learn the date of your death truly freaks me out. It is certainly nothing I would do in my own life but reading about it is another story...I'm sure to be up all night with this page turner!

What We're Reading the Kids

  • I'm a huge fan of Oliver Jeffers. So many beautifully illustrated and quirky children's books are in his wheelhouse. Stuck is fan favorite in our house but as our kids are really in space at the moment we've been reading Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth. They're loving it and hopefully, learning something about Earth and all of it's inhabitants along the way.

Instagram Handle

  • I've been following @courtneyadamo a co-founder Babyccino Kids since she had three kids and lived in London...she now has five and lives in Byron Bay, Australia. Along the way she and her family packed up their life and traveled the world together for a year and documented it at somewhereslower.com...her feed always appeals to my wanderlust.

Guilty Pleasure

  • Hiding my kids Easter candy and then eating it myself!

I Need A Vacation

  • Anywhere, but Chicago for Spring Break next year. Perhaps I should specify...anywhere, warmer than Chicago, si vous plait. And if we're talking Spring Break I know my kids would flip out over the amazing pools at Disney's Aulani Resort in Hawaii. I better start saving my pennies!

Shit My Kids Will Eat
