Kate's Monthly Take - December 2019

I blinked and it’s December, almost mid December…practically January! How does this happen so quickly every year??? December can be such a joyous yet stressful time…I’m trying to concentrate on a few special things this month and enjoy them more fully vs cramming so much into each day. Wish me luck!!! No seriously, though we have a simple bucket list (only 5 things) and will be celebrating Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning with just our family of five. I hope it’s a memory we treasure forever! Happy Holiday Season!

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - December 2019

Mood

  • This is a constant struggle for me but I’m trying…“If you want to conquer the anxiety of life, live in the moment, live in the breath.” - Amit Ray

Currently Coveting

  • A pair of sparkly heels for a handful of festive engagements this season! I love these, but honestly why do all heels have to be 3.5” high? I can barely walk in them at that height and who knows what will happen after a glass of wine!

Favorite Product

  • This season I can’t live without my box cutter (for all the online shopping) and my razor paper cutter (for all the gift wrapping). Seriously, these items help make the holidays run a little smoother!

Design Pick

  • My dream is to have a home with a breakfast nook and in it I would have a round marble topped table…preferably but not realistically it would be a Saarinen round dining table. It’s something my modern design loving husband and I could most certainly agree on!

What I'm Reading

  • My mom just lent me a few books and I haven’t had a chance to start any yet but The Dutch House is on the top of my bedside pile!

What I’m Listening To

  • I haven’t had a lot of free time in the car or meeting less workdays but I have started to listen to Michelle Obama’s, Becoming on Audible. Michelle narrates it, she has such a lovely voice and I’m learning she was quite spunky as a kid.

What We're Reading the Kids

What I’m Watching

  • All the holiday movies that I can. My favorite is White Christmas but Home Alone, Love Actually and The Holiday are fiercely vying for second place.

Instagram Handle

  • Joanna Goddard and her blog (Cup of Jo) came along eons ago. She’s part of the OG blogging crew for sure. I read articles based on posts on the gram and I appreciate her and the blog so much because it’s not her posing in an outfit that she is trying to sell but it’s a collection of really useful and amusing info. Maybe it’s the stage of life I’m in but I relate to a lot of the material. I love the posts with reader blog comments and the gift guides are pretty spot on. They guides are pared down, reasonable and creative. Stick on Earrings for the girls and a wallet for George were recent stocking stuffer ideas sourced from Cup of Jo.

Guilty Pleasure

  • I’m going to be completely honest here…I love to decorate our Christmas tree without the kids. I’m not a complete Scrooge as the kids do like to help put the ornaments on but I love it when they are in bed and I can get out the remaining ornaments and rearrange the tree. Houston, we have a problem…

I Need A Vacation

  • Anyone else wanted to be transported to a cozy English village in the countryside like in the movie the Holiday? Naturally, there is an entire website devoted to English Country Cottage rentals! So maybe I won’t make it there this year but someday it’s going to happen!

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - When we cook in the winter it’s often soup…I can’t stop myself there is always a new soup recipe to try and I will actually eat the leftovers. I’m not a huge leftover fan but soup I will eat. Anyways, we recently tried Zuppa Toscana for the first time. We used a recipe from Budget Bytes and while I probably prefer something with a tomato base of sorts this was a great way for the kids and myself to eat kale. Wilted in soup is basically the only way any of us will eat it!

Kate's Monthly Take - November 2019

The winter months are especially hard in Chicago and unfortunately, the bitter cold and snow have made an appearance far earlier than I would have liked. While the cold months drag on, maintaining health and getting bundled kids out the door is a real struggle I’ve realized how important it has become to have a community of support around us. I would be lost without the teachers and families that have helped pick up a child from school when I couldn’t, taken them to dance class or helped to ensure that they didn’t leave their mittens at school yet again. All of these little efforts help to make raising kids especially during the dreary winter months a little bit easier and during this month of Thanksgiving, I’m grateful.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - November 2019

Mood

  • Some days I feel like “Don’t tell me the sky’s the limit, when there are footprints on the moon” and other days I can barely drag myself out of bed…so I’m hoping I can find some sort of happy medium for the remainder of the year.

Currently Coveting

  • I love real Christmas trees and we generally get a 9 foot Fraser Fir which I love but I really want another more spartan tree for our kitchen or dining area. I love the look of a German Goose Feather tree but want something larger so I think I’m putting this tree Alpine Balsam Fir from Balsam Hill on my Christmas list. I can’t decide if I prefer unlit or not but in general I want the tree to be decorated a bit more sparingly than our main tree. I suppose I should go with lit because I love staring at the lights on Christmas trees during the holiday season.

Favorite Product

  • With our second and third kids we haven’t been the most consistent with focusing their attention on learning to recognize their letters and counting etc… Some days it’s just a miracle that we get them all dressed, fed and out the door. Our middle child sometimes has a hard time focusing on more structured learning mainly because he would rather be playing. Of course, playing can also involve learning which is why I’m loving Peaceable Kingdom and eeBoo card games that are keeping us all entertained and learning at the same time. Peaceable Kingdom’s Alphabet Go Fish Matching Game is perfect for our preschooler whereas our second grader is really into eeBoo’s Spanish Bingo Game.

Design Pick

  • I’m really into this neo traditional home with sleek modern amenities all set in historic New Canaan, Connecticut. Sounds like a dream home to me, and it is for many - it’s the 2019 This Old House Idea House and I’m sold! When I was little I really wanted to live in CT so maybe it’s a sign. The exterior, the kitchen and the decks are my favorite!

What I'm Reading

  • I just finished reading My Friend Anna: The True Story of a Fake Heiress written by Rachel deLoache Williams based on the Soho Grifter and con artist Anna Sorokin who took New York City by storm. It was entirely addictive and had I been aware of the trial earlier this year I’m sure I would have been addicted to the news but for now I’m obsessively researching the story after the fact.

What I’m Listening To

  • For a while I’ve been thinking about needing to close a chapter in my life and start something new so I’ve been listening to the incredibly inspiring Second Life Podcasts. I’ve been picking and choosing the guests so I haven’t listed to them all but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Eva Chen, Jennifer Meyer, Rachel Zoe, Christina Tosi and Emily Henderson amongst others. The pod has given me hope but also continues to acknowledge that nothing worth having is without hustling.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • The kids have been reading all sorts of different things this month but nothings stands out more than the following. Lucy discovered graphic novels at our school’s Scholastic Book Fair and has read Smile a minimum of 30 times often at the breakfast and dinner table. Our 2 year old is equally obsessive requesting readings every night of Zombelina or Zombelina School Days, I’m anxiously awaiting the debut of Zombelina Dances the Nutcracker because there is only so much reading of the same book that one parent can take! And George, well he truly loves cars and trucks so much that almost every book he pays attention has cars at the core. Good Night, Little Blue Truck fits that theme perfectly and is one of his new favorites!

What I’m Watching

  • I’m on episode 2 of HBO’s new show, His Dark Materials and I’m hooked. I haven’t read the books by Phillip Pullman but am loving the combination of fantasy and science fiction as well as some pretty great costumes and cinematography. It airs on Monday nights and it’s so nice to be addicted to a show again!

Instagram Handle

  • This time of year is all about entertaining and holiday gatherings and @ainttooproudtomeg posts the most wonderful food boards. Honestly, I can sit and watch her videos of her putting them together for hours…I swear they have a soothing effect! The boards offer all sorts of inspiration and are easy enough to scale down in size for the celebration in your life!

Guilty Pleasure

  • Does stealing from my kids candy stashes count? Because even though Halloween has passed I’m still doing it. Especially, searching for all the chocolate! Shhh…don’t tell!

I Need A Vacation

  • It’s only been a week or two of cold weather and I’m already dreaming of someplace warm; Marrakech to be exact. I traveled to Morocco when I was studying abroad during college and would love to go back and perhaps skip the hostels. Outside of Marrakech one can spend time in the Atlas Mountains and while I drove through them during my initial trip at stay a Sir Richard Branson’s resort, Kasbah Tamadot would be heavenly. My sudden desire to return to Morocco was most certainly influenced by my recent reading material.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - We had some house guests in town right after Halloween and we had a big Sunday breakfast and tested out some possible recipes for Christmas morning. These homemade overnight Cinnamon Rolls by Baker Bettie and Ina Gartens’ English Muffin Breakfast Bake were crowd pleasers all around. They all take a bit of prep work the night before but were both so delicious, I especially like the egg dish with sliced tomatoes on top!

Kate's Monthly Take - September 2019

School started less than two weeks ago and I’m already barely holding on by a thread! Mornings are rough around here…the kids have so much energy and it’s hard to harness it and get them out the door. It might help if I got up a little earlier but when I don’t go to bed until midnight it’s hard for me to get up before 6:30am and getting ready for work plus managing the kids and making lunches and getting the older ones to school by 8:25am is rough! Ah….summer I miss you already!

As fall is only a couple weeks away and the colder temps are soon to to follow I’m adding a new section to Kate’s Monthly Take…What I’m Watching. My entertainment consumption increases in the colder months and I’m gonna tell y’all about it!

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Mood

  • Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” I believe this quote is from Benjamin Franklin and it holds true for me at work and also for the kids at home. I’m trying to teach and involve them a bit more in their morning school routine…in hopes (fingers crossed) of them becoming a bit more self sufficient and me becoming less of a broken record!

Currently Coveting

  • I love the embroidered cashmere sweaters from Lingua Franca. They even have embroidery classes where they teach you how to sew your custom sweater. I would love to go one…now to coordinate travel to NYC and decide what to put on my sweater; maybe something like “Not Just A Mother.” As for the sweater color…that’s easy - Navy!

Favorite Product

  • This month it’s these Morning and Evening checklists from Honey Bee Tees. We don’t use the Evening one all the time but the Morning version is used every morning before school to help keep us on track and hopefully, teach my oldest to operate a little more independently! Fingers crossed I get to sound a little bit less like a broken record this school year!

Design Pick

  • Target just launched 20 Years of Design for All Anniversary Collection with some top sellers from many of their previous designer collaborations. Many things are gone but this Hunter backpack cooler is still available. It’s perfect for a picnic or an outdoor concert, fits a good amount and isn’t too heavy. I got one in Hunter’s original Target partnership and love it!

What I'm Reading

What I’m Listening To

  • Former President Obama tweeted his Summer 2019 playlist at the end of August and it’s been on repeat at work ever since. It literally has something for everyone!

What We're Reading the Kids

  • I couldn’t be more excited about this as I loved (still love) Anne of Green Gables so much…I recently discovered this chapter book series inspired by Anne of Green Gables. The first two books are available; Anne Arrives and Anne’s Kindred Spirits. We’ve plowed through them together and now Lucy reads them to herself. The series is an abbreviated version of the book for young readers but for the most part follow the original story line and have the most beautiful illustrations. Book number three, can’t come fast enough!

  • George isn’t so into Anne of Green Gables but he does love this new book he received for his birthday, What Kind of Car Does a T.Rex Drive?. It’s perfect for the Dinosaur and Car obsessed boy in my life.

What I’m Watching

  • I just watched Late Night with Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling on Amazon and was thoroughly engaged so much so…that I didn’t attempt to multitask at all. And that is saying something!

Instagram Handle

  • I’ve been following Shop Love Lucy for a while now, originally due to her cute custom tag and card designs available on Etsy but now that she is taking a break from that I can go down a rabbit hole watching all over organization tips. My favorite tip…is that she stores her daughters American Girl loot in these scalloped trimmed nesting baskets from Ballard Designs.

Guilty Pleasure

  • I really can’t quit the mini ice cream cones (Hold the Cone) from Trader Joe’s. I just discovered them in May and they have been a staple in our freezer ever since. Chocolate and Vanilla is my favorite - the only problem is they don’t last long! It may be best if I start to avoid the freezer section at the store.

I Need A Vacation

  • We had planned to take a quick trip to Washington D.C. in October over one of our three day weekends but our schedule has filled up so much that we are most likely going to wait to the spring or next fall. Aside from visiting some close friends in the area, I’m most looking forward to taking the kids to Mount Vernon and I imagine it really shows off with the fall foliage.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - No big shocker here but we recently tried another What’s Gaby Cooking recipe…Chicken Caesar Salad Pizza. It’s made on the grill (or grill pan) is full of all sorts of great textures and if you love a Caesar Salad you’ll be into this too. We didn’t make our own dressing and I wish we had but our store bought worked just fine and even my pickiest eaters were digging the cheese and chicken on the pizza even if they did avoid the lettuce!

Kate's Monthly Take - August 2019

We are settling back in from vacation and reality can be a harsh adjustment…although I think I feel this more than the kids. August is a busy month right before school starts with our last camps, loads of birthday parties, squeezing in those last summer bucket list items, school shopping, and more than a few changes at work for me. To say that I’m feeling overwhelmed is an understatement but hopefully, making manageable to-do lists will help!

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - August 2019

Mood

  • I’m trying to remember this especially at work where I sometimes I feel like a live an entire day before even arriving at the office…”Your Energy Introduces You, Before You Do.”

Currently Coveting

  • I’m itching to get rid of all my kids plastic plates and bowls and replace them some traditional enamel plates and bowls. I have my eyes on these but am trying to hold off until my youngest is three…hopefully, in a moment of weakness I don’t throw all our existing ones in the trash!

Favorite Product

  • After surviving a mostly screen free 2000+ mile road trip with three kids 7 and under, I’m sharing some of the products that helped make it possible. This Magna-Qubix set was a huge hit with my 4 and 2 year old. We actually have two sets the 19 and 29-piece versions and they entertained them both for hours. George liked to build things with them while Maggie liked the shaking sound that they made. They are of decent size so big enough that they are not easily lost and don’t end up in Maggie’s mouth. Magnetic Fun travel tins we are also a favorite this trip, we brought along a couple different themes and everyone loved them. George isn’t typically a big fan of comics but this Magnetic Marvel version kept him entertained. And finally, our oldest could be nicknamed the “sticker queen” as she loves to play with stickers when we travel. This Melissa & Doug Make-A-Face set and this Paint by Stickers Unicorns & Magic book were her favorite this trip. So much so that she still played with them for an entire hour after we got home.

Design Pick

  • Have y’all seen Drew Barrymore’s launch of Flower Kids? It’s her kids focused furniture line and it’s adorable, colorful and on trend at an affordable price. I’m personally swooning over this pear bookcase and this rainbow version because I obviously need more book storage in my life. In the launch of the line I also spotted these cloud shaped headboards that I think would be perfect for a pair of twin beds in a childs’ room but I can’t find them for sale anywhere. The hunt will most certainly go on as I think they need to find a place in my storage unit for that pretend future home of mine!

What I'm Reading

  • I finished two books on our vacation but the The Tuscan Child was my favorite. Naturally, it has me dreaming of Italy and crossing my fingers that someone picks up the movie rights. Next up, is the Three Women, which sounds both fascinating yet depressing but an entirely accurate and sad representation of three different women.

What I’m Listening To

  • Ooh La La, by the Faces was often requested on our road trip and I have to say it’s an excellent choice for a road trip soundtrack.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • We’re celebrating a little bit of diversity this month with these two fantastics books: All The Ways to Be Smart and Incredible Jobs You’ve Never Heard Of. Most of my life I believed there was only one way to do things yet in reality, there are so many other ways to lead a fulfilled life. I’m hoping we can teach our kids that from the onset and these beautifully illustrated books help us achieve that goal.

Instagram Handle

  • I’ve been cooking with a lot of recipes from What’s Gaby Cookin so naturally, I like to follow her. All of the California girl, fresh food recipes that you could ever want and her ever popular weekly meal plans can be found on Instagram! I almost always find something to try!

Guilty Pleasure

  • We have a plethora of fantastic empanada shops in Chicago but 5411 Empanadas is one of our favorites. They have this purple potato, honey and ricotta limited edition empanada that is so good I had to wrestle George for it!

I Need A Vacation

  • Our summer vacations are most often spent at the beach or at the lake but I can’t help but hoping that when the kids are a little bit older that we can visit Jackson Hole Wyoming and then head up to Grand Teton National Park. I wouldn’t mind a pit stop at the Four Seasons before a stay in something a bit more rustic like Teton Valley Ranch Camp.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - We haven’t cooked much in the past couple of weeks but while on vacation we did make this Basil Vinaigrette from What’s Gaby Cookin and it was so delicious. We put it over grilled chicken, grilled corn and a tomato and avocado salad. Honestly, it would really go with almost anything…especially it if was fresh off the grill!

Kate's Monthly Take - July 2019

An object in motion, stays in motion…isn’t that how Newton’s law of inertia, goes? Well, I can relate. This summer is so buy that I find I can only get anything done if I keep moving because when I sit down, I’m done for. Literally, will not move for hours which means that some things like blogging which I love have been put on the back burner while I tackle things like spending more time with the kids this summer. Looking forward to enjoying the rest of the summer yet kind of thinking wistfully about the consistency of the school year. Anyways, I managed to find a few spare minutes while the kids slept en route to Wisconsin to share some of my July favorites.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - July 2019

Mood

  • Still exhausted. Entertaining 3 kids in the summer is no joke! Even with summer camps!

Currently Coveting

  • A decent pair of pajamas. My kids have much nicer than pj’s than I do and I think it’s about time for an upgrade. This sweet set would be perfect for this steamy weather.

Favorite Product

  • My favorite product is a bit practical this month. Mosquitos just love my son and he loves to be outside so it’s a constant struggle as I still haven’t found the proper repellant for him. However, when he does get bit, we’ve got it down. A combination of Benadryl Anti-Itch Cream and After Bite does wonders to calm the itching and reduce the bite.

Design Pick

  • I love utility sinks and I dream about have a jack-and-jill bathroom for my kids with this KOHLER sink. I might even pair it with these Hammam bath towels.

What I'm Reading

What I’m Listening To

  • We’ve been driving back and forth to Wisconsin a lot this month and Banjo Renews by John Craigie is always requested by the kids.

What We're Reading the Kids

Instagram Handle

  • I love to follow Gray Benko. She is the most inspiring and colorful photographer and has the most expressive children!

Guilty Pleasure

  • I’ve gotten into a really bad habit this month of eating double stuff oreos. I bought them in a moment of weakness at Target and I can’t stop eating them!

I Need A Vacation

  • Ever since seeing the original Parent Trap, I’ve always dreamed of going off to camp. So when I came across this dreamy resort/camp in Maine for families, called Migis Lodge, I immediately put it on my short list of dream vacations. Meals and activities are included plus everyone dresses up for dinner - sounds perfect!

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - I’ve made this Chicken Tortellini Salad a couple of time this month and while my kids don’t exactly eat the salad they do eat some of the ingredients. The salad itself is delicious and the white balsamic vinaigrette is so refreshing. Do not skip on toasting the pecans they are one of my favorite things about the salad! To avoid making two dinners I give the kids some of the salad ingredients: tortellini, roast chicken and corn for their meal while we eat the salad. It’s a win win!

Kate's Monthly Take - June 2019

I’m the type of person who doesn’t relax easily until things are in order. Having three kids has helped me to ease up a bit because there just aren’t enough hours in the day but I truly do not feel free until I’m organized. Summer Break started last week and I feel like I’m behind as we haven’t developed our summer reading lists or a bucket list of activities. It’s almost July and I feel like the summer is going to be over before I know it. So, even though I don’t feel prepared I’m going to try and stay in the moment and enjoy the time with the kids. I know I’ll eventually build a bucket list with them so for now I’ll relish the lazier mornings and cut myself some slack.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

  • Exhausted. Pure Exhaustion.

Currently Coveting

Favorite Product

  • I’ve always wanted longer and fuller eyelashes constantly testing out new mascaras trying to find “the one” to make my stubby eyelashes look amazing (at this point I settle for looking awake). Eyelash extensions have always fascinated yet terrified me. The time commitment, cost and the fear of losing any existing lashes have kept me away. Enter, RevitaLash Eyelash Conditioner. My mom introduced me to the product and after three months of using it my eyelashes look so much fuller! It may require me to use the product for years in order to maintain the results but all in it’s a less expensive and less time consuming!

Design Pick

  • I was reading the most recent issue of House Beautiful and I came across the fiber sculpturess, Mandi Smethells who makes the most amazing fiber rainbows and sells them on Etsy. I am in LOVE with them! This one with pom poms is my favorite and would be perfect in a girls bedroom or in some sort of vignette with other mixed media.

What I'm Reading

  • I just read When Life Gives You Lululemons and my younger self would have loved it but I was entirely dissapointed in the subject matter. On the complete opposite spectrum, I’ve now started a summer book club at work and we’re reading a sci fi thriller called, Recursion. It’s supposed to be captivating - hopefully, I’ll be able to keep up!

What I’m Listening To

What We're Reading the Kids

  • The kids are in a Summer Enrichment Camp this week learning all about Sharks so we’re reading Ocean themed tombs this week. Smart About Sharks!, Captain Starfish and Manfish are all on the bedtime rotation and they’re certainly teaching me a thing or two.

Instagram Handle

  • Katie Armour (katieconsiders.com formerly the Neo-Trad) is one of my favorites to follow for design, wardrobe and book recommendations. I receive her newsletter and appreciate the quick bits of information as I often don’t have much time to read especially in the morning but it’s chock full of colorful yet classic recommendations that I often explore.

Guilty Pleasure

  • I’ve watched the first two seasons and now that the third has been released I’ve been binge watching Jessica Jones on Netflix, far too late into the evening. I can certainly relate to episode three.

I Need A Vacation

  • This time of year I feel like the East Coast is calling. Social media is brutal that way - there are so many beautiful pictures of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard each and every day. The Wauwinet is full of charm and would be perfect for a long weekend, if only I could get over my fear of small planes.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

Kate's Monthly Take - May 2019

We have about 3.5 more weeks until school is out for the summer and I can’t believe the year has gone so fast. I both love and dread the summer months. I’m going to miss the quiet afternoons when the older two are at school and my youngest is napping but will relish the slower pace and all the fun summer activities!

  • Complete and utter shock. The new anti-abortion movement is gaining momentum and the pending abortion laws in many states especially in Alabama, are horrifying. As a mother of two daughters I’m concerned about the implication of this on Roe v. Wade and women’s rights. As I look to the future, I think about their college education and how states’ that restrict their rights may play into that decision. This article does a good job providing an overview of abortion restrictions by state.

Currently Coveting

  • I really want to get into Container Gardening. I’d love something like this wooden elevated container to plant herbs like basil and rosemary and lettuces. Different size options are available which make it completely feasible for our little city backyard!

Favorite Product

  • For the past six months I’ve been taking Collagen Peptides by Vital Proteins. I was introduced to it by my sister-in-law and I put it in my hot tea every morning. I’ve tried putting it in a smoothie but I’ve found it disintegrates much better into a hot liquid. I primarily started to taking it to boost hair growth as I lost so much with all my pregnancies and while it has helped to make my hair stronger I’ve noticed an added benefit of clearer skin. Bonus!

Design Pick

  • As Memorial Day approaches I often daydream about the backyard of my dreams. It will have plenty of room for the kids to run around in plus lush hydrangeas, teak furniture, beautiful planters, twinkle lights and an epic grill for my husband. Of course, with an epic grill we will frequently eat outdoors using the bamboo flatware of my dreams. I’ve always loved this flatware and I don’t think there could be anything more chic to use for a summer dinner party, than said flatware. And no, I haven’t actually thrown a dinner party in years but it’s all part of my daydream!

What I'm Reading

  • I just picked up the very popular, Where the Crawdads Sing, which I hope to read over Memorial Day Weekend. I’m sure I won’t be the only one!

What I’m Listening To

  • My husband is obsessed with Lukas Nelson (son of Willie) and the Promise of Real album. I have to admit it’s pretty good and I even find myself listening to it, when he’s not around and Find Yourself, is a highlight.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • We’re nearing the end of the school year so we’ve been talking about our summer plans. The kids are hoping for another road trip to see more of the country that may or may not involve a trip to a National Park; so they’re reading up on them via the eye catching, National Parks of the U.S.A book by Wide Eyed Editions. I shouldn’t forget to mention our forever favorite, The 50 States: Explore the 50 States also by Wide Eyed Editions that frequently accompanies us on road trips and is included in all discussions revolving around travel. Ooh and if you’re traveling to the Southwest this picture book about the Grand Canyon, looks amazing!

Instagram Handle

  • I’m always looking for new restaurants to try in Chicago and elsewhere and I just started following The Infatuation (infatuation) and (infatuation_chi). Both accounts are helping me discover new restaurants even when I don’t get out that much. The good news is that if we do score a sitter, we know where to go! #EEEEEATS

Guilty Pleasure

  • I’m supposed to be giving up candy (read: processed sugar) but I’m currently addicted to the Watermelon Slices from Sugarfina. IMHO these are hands down the best candy Sugarfina sells and I can’t stop eating them!

I Need A Vacation

  • I don’t think it will happen this summer but one thing on my bucket list is to rent an Airstream trailer and drive to the Black Hills of South Dakota to visit Mt. Rushmore. I’ve never been and I’m pretty confident we should wait until our youngest is a little older but I seriously can’t wait to plan our Airstream adventure.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

Kate's Monthly Take - April 2019

The word “No” or “No, thank you” need to become a bigger part of my vocabulary especially when it comes to Elementary school volunteering. Anyone else in the midst of prepping for a Spring Fundraiser? I truly don’t mind helping but somehow all work and personal deadlines seem to always come at once! Thankfully, only one more week to go!

Kate's Monthly Take - April 2019

Mood

  • I’m always in the mood for pizza and I can’t wait for the weather to get a tad warmer for outdoor dining at our favorite Neapolitan spot in Chicago, Spacca Napoli.

Currently Coveting

  • I’m in love with this ASCENO dress but I think these EVA essentials Birkenstocks are a little more realistic and perfect for the chasing kids near the water! I’m eyeing the lavender color but plan to size down a size according to reviews.

Favorite Product

  • In the last year I’ve started to using a jade roller to help apply facial serums and recently ordered an Ice Roller Face Massager from PUR Botanticals at the urging of a friend. I have to admit the Ice Roller is pretty amazing especially at helping to depuff my eyes and I now use it more frequently than my jade roller.

Design Pick

  • We’re about to recover two chairs in our living room and I’m not sure how the new fabric will look with our existing rug so I’ve been fantasizing about cotton flatweave rugs. I’ve always loved cotton flatweave rugs, they’re not too thick and you can easily flip them over to hide stains. Madeline Weinrib rugs were my favorite but as she closed her business last year I’ve been searching for other options. William Sonoma Home has an excellent selection and this Stonewashed Variegated Stripe Flatweave is my favorite.

What I'm Reading

  • Thanks to a mechanical issue on an airplane earlier this week I was able to read, The Tattooist of Aushcwitz, in one sitting. I’ve read a lot of Holocaust stories and this one captured my attention offering a glimpse into a time and operations of Auschwitz that I hadn’t previously known about; definitely recommend.

What I’m Listening To

  • I feel lucky to say that we’ve largely avoided music in our home that was specific to children. My two youngest love music especially and all three taken children’s music classes for years at the beloved Old Town School of Folk Music but it hasn’t been until recently that the kids have become obsessed with two mildly obnoxious songs. Enter Ping Fong’s, Baby Shark and Raffi’s, Bananaphone. The youngest two are obsessed, maybe I’ll embrace it.

  • Tanksgoodnews shares uplifting news stores from around the world - something we all could use!

Guilty Pleasure

  • I recently caught onto the reboot of Queer Eye on Netflix. I’m late to the party as the show is on its’ third season but I have to say after watching the original I may like this one even better. It seems to be a bit more “real” or “raw” than the original or maybe it’s just that I’m older now and more aware of the breadth of humanity. Anyways, it’s lovely and it’s so easy to watch one, two, or five episodes in a row!

I Need A Vacation

  • We’re about to head to down south for some warmer weather, sunshine and weather permitting an epic Easter egg hunt. While I don’t necessarily consider traveling with kids a vacation, Seaside, Florida is my “happy place” and it’s a lovely spot to spend time with your family. Kids and adults alike are excited!

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - While it’s technically Spring in the Midwest that generally means one day it will be 55 degrees F and sunny and the next day there will be snow. On one of the colder days we tried this one pot Lasagna Soup recipe from Food 52 topped with Ricotta Parmesan cream and man, was it good! Simple to prepare on a weeknight and the kids all ate it plus the leftovers the next day.

Kate's Monthly Take - March 2019

The last six weeks have been full of one ear infection, fever, cold, cough, rash and stomach bug after the other. I didn’t mean to take a blog hiatus but I pretty much live at the doctors office. I’m hopeful with the warmer weather we’re having in Chicago this week that our days as an infirmary are coming to an end. Hoping that your winter season hasn’t been quite as rough and that you’re experiencing a warm up too!

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - March 2019

Mood

  • There aren’t enough hours in the day…or days in the week! But taking even just one hour for myself each week to go to a SoulCycle class is helping me feel less overwhelmed.

Currently Coveting

  • A sleek black hooded raincoat! A little more practical than my standard wish list item but sadly, the City Anorak I’ve been eyeing for months runs a little bit big and they are all sold out of my size.

Favorite Product

  • My oldest daughter and I are loving Lunch Lines! This book of tear off mealtime jokes is definitely helping to spice up her often mundane, school lunch. I might not have time to write her a note every day but I do have time to tear off a lunchtime riddle pop it into her lunch.

Design Pick

  • I love matching or coordinating my kids whenever possible. A fact of life I’m sure they will begin to loathe. A friend recently gave my oldest a new striped hooded towel with a pom pom on the hood. I love stripes and pom poms so naturally, I had to get coordinating ones for the younger kids. We have the pink and blue versions and I kept all of their monograms the same thread color. They are adorable!

What I'm Reading

What I’m Listening To

  • We’re heading to Nasvhille next week and I’ve been listening to Kacey Musgraves to get me in the Country mood. High Horse is a favorite at our house!

What We're Reading the Kids

  • We’re reading a couple wonderful new books to our youngest two: At the Firehouse, which is a new Tinyville Town book (one of my son’s favorite series) and Hello Lighthouse which is the sweetest story with the most beautiful illustrations.

  • Our oldest is to the age where we are experimenting with chapter books at bedtime and we just started, Pippi Longstocking! I’m not sure I’ll ever tire of reliving my favorite books with the kids…if only, I could stop falling alseep in their beds.

Instagram Handle

  • My husband has been a long time fan of Comments By Celebs on Instagram. I’m a bit newer to following their feed but if you need a good laugh..follow them! They repost Celeb posts and highlight amusing comments by other celebs. They even have a separate Bravo account!

Guilty Pleasure

  • This is totally random but I’m newly obsessed with sourcing vintage Fisher Price Alphabet magnets on Etsy. I wanted to find some alphabet magnets for the kids to practice spelling and I couldn’t find any that I loved on Amazon. Everything was too big for our magnet board and the vintage ones fit just right so I went down a rabbit hole on Etsy. It’s my new late night habit and I almost have a full set!

I Need A Vacation

  • While I am traveling quite a bit the next month both for work and for personal, I’m most excited about visiting my favorite spot in Florida. My parents brought us to Seaside, Florida for the first time when I was in 6th grade and we’ve almost been back every year. Seaside and the rest of 30A has certainly grown over the last couple of decades but its still one of my favorite family destinations and the architecture isn’t bad either!

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - We recently made Low Carb Chicken Divan and it was like reliving my childhood. Chicken Divan was one of the only regular dinnertime staples that I can recall from growing up. The recipe says Low Carb but we made rice to accompany our so I’m pretty sure that negates the “Low Carb” claim. The meal is rich but definitely satisfying and succeeds in getting the kids to eat both a vegetable and a protein which is sometimes a struggle in our house.

Kate's Monthly Take - February 2019

January seemed to drag on forever and February is just flying by. I’m not sure where the time goes but the winter is such a blur full of endless colds, snuggles and loads of soup. I know someday, I will miss all the mundane parts of motherhood but right now, I’d love a break especially of all the winter attire! Despite all the colds, we’re filling our days with loads of activities, more ski lessons and our first trip to Legoland Discovery Center in Schaumburg.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - February 2019

Mood

  • One step forward; two steps back. Progress is something that has to be worked for.

Currently Coveting

  • I’m coveting jewelry again this month…but specifically earrings! I rarely wear anything but studs but in warmer months I like to wear hoops. These Wavy Resin Hoops and Pearl Hoops from Anthropologie are right up my alley!

Favorite Product

  • I’m not a beauty product junkie by any means but once a year I get an itch to try something new. This winter I’ve been trying Kiehls Glow Formula Skin Hydrator. I mix it with my face lotion and apply in the morning if I’m running to school drop off, to Soul Cycle or the store. I really only wear makeup if I’m going into the office or out at night but I love that this lotion provides some coverage and of course a subtle glow in the middle of winter.

Design Pick

  • I’m constantly thinking of ways to brighten up our home and I recently came across Kerri Rosthenthal who has trademarked something called paperless wallpaper. She has essentially take designs from her wallpaper and turned them into removable decals. My favorite are the Rainbow and Nomad styles. I think they would be so fun in a playroom, a kids bathroom, bedroom or even as a way to bring some color into a walk in closet.

What I'm Reading

  • I’m almost through reading One Day in December, it’s quite addictive and if the movie rights have not yet been purchased I’m sure they will be! It reminds me a bit of One Day, which was one of my favorites. I mean clearly, I’m a sucker for just about any love story set in the UK.

What I’m Listening To

  • Queen! I recently watched Bohemian Rhapsody (so good!) and now I can’t get Radio Ga Ga out of my head. The kids enjoy it too, so it’s often playing in the house.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • We all love the Elephant & Piggie books (Should I Share My Ice Cream? is our favorite) and through our school book fair I picked up, The Itchy Book. My four year old loves it and my seven year old can even read it to him. It’s in the style of Elephant & Piggie (even endorsed by then) and I’ll be damned if you can get through it without starting to scratch your skin!

Instagram Handle

  • I love to follow Bailey McCarthy aka baileyquin. She is the owner of Biscuit Home and has impeccable taste and style. She takes some incredible decorating risks that always leave me inspired especially when it comes to her art collection.

Guilty Pleasure

  • Staying up all night reading. I have this terrible habit of reading until 3 or 4am in the morning. I get obsessed with a book and can’t stop but it’s brutal on my patience with my children. After an all night reading session I have to counter balance it by going to bed at 9pm for a few days. Luckily, this habit seems to rear it’s head most frequently in the winter…I mean who doesn’t want to be curled up in bed with a book during the winter? My nerdy little reading light definitely aids in this guilty pleasure!

I Need A Vacation

  • I’m not sure when it happend…I never traveled there when I was younger, my first time was probably in my mid 20’s but I love California. Maybe it’s the weather and quite possibly the food but I’d love to pick up and go right about now; especially to stay at Hotel 850 in Los Angeles. It’s utterly charming especially the Carriage Room designed by famed interior designer Rita Konig.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - As most of us are fighting colds right now we’ve been trying different soup recipes. We recently made this delicious and a bit spicy Italian Vegetable Soup with Gnocchi. The kids all ate it despite commenting on the spice. If you love things spicy definitely follow the recipe exactly but if you like only a little spice, may I recommend omitting the red pepper flakes or subbing out one can of the diced fired roasted tomatoes for a non roasted can.

Kate's Monthly Take - January 2019

2019. January. Sigh… maybe it’s the weather in the Midwest this time of year or the numerous weeks I need post holidays and winter break to feel like I can take a breath but January never feels like a new beginning to me. Maybe, if I lived in a warmer climate I would feel differently, thus, I’m not big on resolutions. They aren’t something I typically follow through with the entire year and I already have loads of items on my to-do lists that I never get to. So really, I have no desire to beat myself up about them. Nevertheless, I do like to set goals. This year I’m setting three goals…bucket list goals, if you will. They are all about doing new things, traveling to a new place and having new experiences yet completely attainable. It’s up to me to find the time to complete these goals but I’m always inspired by having new experiences, so there is really no excuse!

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - January 2019

Mood

  • Just keep swimming. I’m so behind on so many things and feel quite disorganized that I’m trying to remind myself that steady progress is ok!

Currently Coveting

  • A new ring. I’m loving this gold plated Oli ring from Daphine. Do I order two, to wear them stacked? I love the look just not sure it would translate onto my stocky fingers.

Favorite Product

  • I just got a new pair of Sorel boots and I love them. They are perfect for slipping on quickly in the morning to run errands or drop the kids at school. They are an integral part of my winter uniform; black yoga pants, a big comfy sweater and my favorite smartwool socks.

Design Pick

  • I’m dreaming of decorating a room for our youngest. She desperately needs her own room and designing kids room is just the best. I love to add framed artwork to a kids rooms and I am obsessed with Paule Marrot and some his framed textiles; especially the cloud and butterfly pieces. I would love to add one of these to a room.

What I'm Reading

  • I’m late the party but finally reading the highly praised, Educated. I just started but so far it’s giving me some major, Glass Castle vibes which I also loved.

What I’m Listening To

  • I’m in the midst of quite a bit of project work at the office, which requires me to really focus for blocks of time in order to knock out my deliverables. Time and time again, I go back to The Hamilton, soundtrack to keep me motivated. By the way, if you haven’t seen the musical - GO!

What We're Reading the Kids

Instagram Handle

  • I love to follow Joy Cho, of Oh Joy! She has marvelous creative ideas, truly useful blog posts, adorable little girls and I never tire of her dancing in her Instastories. I swear it’s contagious!

Guilty Pleasure

  • It’s the winter in Chicago so naturally I’m going to say, driving to work! The Metra allows me time to read emails or read a book but I’m not about to chance a late train in these temps!

I Need A Vacation

  • I’m not gonna lie the only thing that cures the winter blues is a trip someplace warm. Just a short trip even four days really helps to break it up and a break from all of the cold weather gear is just heavenly. Our nanny just got back from Jamaica and has been trying to convince us to go for years…Round Hill, looks nice, no?

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - This Heirloom Tomato + Zucchini Tomato Sauce is a crowd pleaser in our house. The zucchini is chopped and cooks down so my kids don’t even realize they are eating it. Made most often in the summer but it’s great in the winter with other tomato varieties. We serve it over store bought gnocchi but you could easily use cauliflower gnocchi, as well.

Kate's Monthly Take - November 2018

My cousin recently reminded me how much one can learn from music. It can build powerful connections between people and evokes so many memories. Music is a powerful thing and I need to listen to more! So this month I’m adding a new feature in my Monthly Take, called…”What I’m Listening To” and I hope that some of the songs will make it onto your playlists!

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - November 2018

Mood

  • Tomorrow is a big day. Never in my lifetime have I felt that midterm elections were so important. I’m nervous, anxious and excited. Get out there and, ROCK the VOTE!

Currently Coveting

  • Fall is here and winter is looming. Chicago temps are dropping and I’m eyeing these eco conscious fleeces from Dudley Stephens. I can’t decide between the Park Slope or the Cobble Hill turtleneck but I know they will definitely elevate my standard uniform.

Favorite Product

  • Its sweater season and one thing that has saved many of my sweaters is this little tool from Remington. It shaves off all of the little pills of fuzz that find their way onto by most loved sweaters; bringing them back to life.

Design Pick

What I'm Reading

  • Thanks to a recommendation from a friend I’m reading, The Dinner List. I love it so far and the question is, which five people dead or alive would you chose to have dinner with?

What I’m Listening To

  • Thanks to a binge watching session of Outlander, I came across the song, “ A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” written by Bob Dylan. There are many renditions of this song but I love this cover version by Walk Off the Earth.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • With Thanksgiving around the corner I found this darling and very appropriate book called The Kiddie Table. The illustrations are lively and If you have a tween in your household they will surely relate to this book. If you’re looking for Thanksgiving book ideas take a peek at my blog post from last year.

Instagram Handle

  • My love of children’s books is frequently highlighted on this blog and I love to follow book lovers on Instagram. Book.Nerd.Mommy is one of my favorites. She has excellent taste and often celebrates the books with recipes and/or crafts. Sounds like someone else, I know! But seriously, I wonder how she stores all of their books. I’m running out of space!

Guilty Pleasure

  • I’ve actually developed a healthy addiction for once! I’m loving taking SoulCycle classes. I leave my husband to feed all the hangry kids on Saturday mornings and take an hour for myself. So perhaps, that’s the part I feel guilty about.

I Need A Vacation

  • I can always use a vacation but I will settle for a trip aka travel with my family. We’re heading east this month on another road trip to New Jersey with pit stops in Cleveland and Manhattan. We can’t wait! We’re spending one night in the city and if we were traveling without kids I would love to stay at the 1 Hotel Central Park.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - Fall temps always have me craving cozy comfort food. We recently made this slow cooker turkey chili. I especially love that the recipe includes corn because I’m always looking for ways to incorporate more vegetables into the kids diet. While, the kids didn’t love all the beans in it they did eat the chili especially when paired with corn bread and shredded cheddar cheese.

Kate's Monthly Take - October 2018

I’m exhausted just thinking about it but love the end of the year holiday rat race…Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Bring. It. On! No, but seriously, I love Halloween and our Chicago neighborhood has helped me fall even harder for it. Chicago is full of fall festivals, spooky sing alongs, business trick-or-treat events and my very favorite, day of Halloween trick-or-treat. Of course, I went trick-or-treating as a child but it was never on Halloween, it was never at night and we never had kids come to our door! Thus, my love for our neighborhood grows strong this month as I eagerly await the hoards of trick-or-treaters that will come barreling towards our door.

Enjoy my Monthly Take with a side of Halloween candy!

Kate's Monthly Take - October 2018

Mood

  • It’s been a divisive couple of weeks. I’m dissappointed with the results but so proud of women who’ve shared their stories, their opinions and their strength.

Currently Coveting

  • I am obsessed with these detachable handbag straps from SALT. They remind me of friendship bracelets and I’m secretly hoping the straps attach to cameras. These ethically sourced products recently launched and have already sold out. The Duke strap is my favorite and luckily the next shipment is available for pre-order!

Favorite Product

  • I love things that I can use in multiple ways. These adorable little decorative suitcases fit that bill. They are my favorite for hiding/organizing kids toys think…matchbox cars or hatchimals. The suitcases are lightweight which makes them easy for kids to carry and tote along to any destination. I’ve also used them for baby shower gifts. It’s so fun to hide some registry items in each suitcase, top with a few board books and tie with a bow. Lucy and George both have a set and Maggie is going to get this rainbow version for Christmas. She is really into purses, so I know she will love this set!

Design Pick

  • My kids are basically destroying any decent piece of furniture that we have and I’m constantly dreaming of re-upholstering a set of two Anthropologie chairs, a couch and a glider. I always love a good stripe but I’m really into this Schumacher Dune Stripe. It would be perfect to recover the glider in it. Anyone know a good re-upholster in the Chicago area? Asking for a friend.

What I'm Reading

What We're Reading the Kids

Instagram Handle

  • Do y'all follow @helenetheillustrator? She is charming, witty a talented illustrator and her account on parenthood is spot on. The September 4th and August 12th posts are my favorite and I’ve definitely been there!

Guilty Pleasure

  • If I’m being honest, Halloween candy. I buy it as soon as it comes into the stores and have to replenish up until the holiday because I buy all of my favorite kinds and eat it myself! In case you’re wondering, I love all of the gummies i.e. DOTS, Sour Patch Kids even the Milk Duds. My dentist loves me! Also the month long showcase of Halloween movies on Freeform, especially Hocus Pocus!

I Need A Vacation

  • There is something magical about the East Coast during the fall. While in college I visited Salem, Massachusetts over fall break but would love to explore more. I’ve never been to Vermont but would love to go during the fall to see the colors and stay at The Woodstock Inn & Resort. I don’t think it’s possible to get any more picturesque!

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved -  I’m not a huge pumpkin fan but every fall I get a craving for pumpkin bread. I have a delicious recipe that calls for sherry but this year I opted for something a little more child appropriate. We made this Smitten Kitchen Pumpkin Bread recipe as muffins with a few adjustments i.e. swapping some sugar out for unsweetened applesauce and we all loved them.

Kate's Monthly Take - September 2018

This past week has been a blur with work, school starting, my sons birthday, our block party and my wedding anniversary. With the start of a new season, September in many ways is a chance to hit the restart button and start fresh. I’m always up for the chance to reset, establish a new schedule and get organized but most importantly I’m hoping that my husband and I can take some time for ourselves. Because if I’ve learned anything this year it’s that if we don’t take time for a little self care and fun... a breaking point is just around the corner.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - September 2018

Mood

  • I'm in a purging and de-cluttering mood and I love it. While time consuming it feels so good to cycle through items that we no longer need or use.

Currently Coveting

  • Two days a week I get to do school drop off which means I'm not heading to the office and I get to dress down. I love to be comfortable and Athleta has some of the comfiest most functional athleisure around. This year I'd love to add this Coaster Luxe Sweatshirt to my closet and I'd wear it with my favorite down shell from last year.

Favorite Product

  • A crowd pleaser in my house especially for school lunches is this Skip Hop Thermos. I use it weekly for spaghetti, macaroni + cheese or soup - it's so easy to clean and puts a smile on my daughter's face when she finds it in her lunchbox. In order to ensure warm food hours later I also pour boiling water (from my tea kettle) into the thermos for a couple of minutes before adding food. Don't forget to pour the water out prior to adding food!

Design Pick

  • We've re-modeled much of our current home i.e. new light fixtures, paint, carpeting, redid the wood floors and fully gutted our kitchen and two bathrooms. There is one bathroom that we only updated cosmetically and even thought not a good investment I still fantasize about remodeling it. The old tile and grout especially bother me so if I had my way we would tear out the tile and replace it with cement tile. I'd go with this Atlas design from Cement Tile Shop and pair it with classic white subway tile.

What I'm Reading

  • Ever since our trip to Asheville, North Carolina and the Biltmore House I've been obsessed with learning more about the Vanderbilt family. So I'm reading, The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderblit. It's kind of a beast but a super interesting Pulitzer Prize Winning Book about a forward thinker that made a profound impact on the United States.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • Our dinosaur lover got a few new books for his birthday and he is really loving, Dinosaur Bob. It's been around for a while; I remember it from childhood but it's the perfect book for our dino, baseball and music loving son!

Instagram Handle

  • Do y'all follow @mrstreetpeeper? If you're into fashion especially street style photography a la the late Bill Cunninghman; then this account is for you. Phil Oh aka @mrstreetpeeper shoots for Vogue Magazine and his account is especially fun during fashion week.

Guilty Pleasure

  • I know I'm late to the party here, as the entire series has wrapped but I've been really into binge watching The Americans. I've always loved Keri Russell (Felicity was my fave) and her hair is just as amazing as ever in, The Americans. I'm only two seasons in; so no spoilers please!

I Need A Vacation

  • North Carolina was so beautiful to drive through last month and I'd love to explore more of the state. I'm particularly interested in areas around the Blue Ridge Mountains, like Cashiers, North Carolina. I'm hoping that someday we can convince our children to check out Wake Forest and UNC while looking at colleges, because I'd sure like to spend a night or two in Fearrington Village.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - As it’s fall we recently jumped on the “pumpkin” bandwagon.

Kate's Monthly Take - August 2018

I'm knee deep in scheduling activities for the school year and the logistics of three children have me hyperventilating. Despite our intense school year schedule I need to take a step back and realize that we have one month before school begins.  Loads of time to relish lazy mornings and check off a few more summer bucket list items. This month, I'm excited for an upcoming week off with the kids. It is a much needed break and will be a great way to end the summer.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - August 2018

Mood

  • What is sleep? Sleep deprivation is my current state of being. Our middle child has been coming into our room every morning around 4am for the last few weeks. This has made for a very moody household so I think I'm going to need to try one of these clocks!

Currently Coveting

  • It was like clockwork; once the calendar changed to August my mind started obsessing about fall clothes. In my defense, I'm mostly thinking about clothes for the kids because my two oldest have recently had growth spurts but then the other day J. Crew launched some new arrivals and I went gaga for a couple of items. I'm over the moon for most anything with a Liberty print and I missed out on similar reversible coat last year so I'd love to snag this one especially if I can get it on sale.  Also this beautiful blouse is giving me major Anne Shirley vibes but I'm not sure I could pull it off!

Favorite Product

  • I'm always on the lookout for a great black tank. I prefer something loose and a bit longer and I think I hit the jackpot with this Luxe High-Neck Swing Tank from Old Navy. There are so many great features about this tank: it's inexpensive, very soft, comes in multiple colors and versatile. I mostly wear mine with yoga pants on my days off from work but I think you could also pair with jeans and a great necklace!

Design Pick

  • I don't know that this necessarily qualifies as a "Design Pick" but if you love all things blue and white these blue and white swirl storage containers from Golden Rabbit Enamelware definitely elevate your picnic game.

What I'm Reading

  • I'm reading Crazy Rich Asians based on a review from my mother and on the fact that the motion picture version will be released later this month. I always prefer to read the book before seeing the movie and this entertaining read will be perfect to wrap up while on vacation. If I end up finishing before vacation, I'll be sure to scoop up the second book in the trilogy. I mean who doesn't love a trilogy, right?

What We're Reading the Kids

  • Our early riser is also a truck lover and he geeks out hard for food trucks. I recently discovered Food Truck Fest! and it's been on heavy rotation every since. The illustrations are vibrant, story relatable and the trucks and go on a ferry ride. Enough said, right?

Instagram Handle

  • Do y'all follow @sarahshermansamuel? She is an interior designer specializing in mid century modern. She just redid Mandy Moore's home in Pasadena and is featured in July's, Architecture Digest. But perhaps more interestingly this mom of two and her husband just moved across the country from Los Angeles, CA to Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was craving a slower pace and they purchased a home over the internet (sight unseen) and are now renovating. I love checking out the home updates.

Guilty Pleasure

  • Ice Cream! Most summer nights after all of the kids are in bed my husband and I look at each other and talk about our ice cream cravings. Lucky and unlucky for our waist lines we have a couple of great ice cream shops within walking distance.

I Need A Vacation

  • We're about to head out on a road trip to the Carolinas with a pit stop in Asheville at the Biltmore but in my dreams I'm traveling to Tuscany and staying here.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved -  I struggle with meal planning. I truly just have a hard time sitting down, finding recipes and then writing a grocery list. Lucky for me I have a friend who loves to do this and she sends me some great recipe ideas. Below are some of her most recent shares and best of all the kids ate both of them! I'm a sucker for Mediterranean food so this Chicken Gyro Salad was delish. We made pita sandwiches with the fixings and added hummus. Pasta is generally a crowd pleaser in our home (we love carbs) but I was a little nervous about this trying this Broccoli Bolognese with Orecchiette recipe as our kids don't love vegetables. To my surprise, all three of them ate it and our son, kept telling us that he actually does like broccoli. My husband liked this dish so much that he wants it to be on regular rotation. Winning!

Kate's Monthly Take - July 2018

We just celebrated July 4th and as a child it signaled to me that summer was halfway over but as a parent I feel it is just beginning. There are so many fun experiences yes to be had and our camp season is just beginning. My older two kids are in day camps for the next five weeks. I'm looking forward to camp helping to build their confidence and also the diversity of kids and ideas that they will be exposed to.  Some may argue that they are too scheduled but as a working mother having a consistent schedule makes our household run a bit smoother.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - July 2018

Mood

  • Conflict avoidance has been my MO for years.  Not necessarily with my spouse but in other relationships and lately this has started to cause problems. An issue that started years ago could have been resolved but because it was never dealt with it has turned into a wound that won't scab over and unfortunately, a larger problem.

Currently Coveting

  • I have this old pair of espadrille platform sandals that I love and go with everything but they aren't made anymore. These beloved sandals have already been to the shoe repair shop several times so it's safe to say they are on their last leg. I've been looking for a new pair of comfortable platforms for the past two summers and I think I've found them. Soludos makes two great options : the Palma Platform and the Minorca High Platform. Now to chose which one!

Favorite Product

  • We've come back from the holiday break with three sick kids. Summer colds have set in and some kids have fevers so we've been using this digital ear thermometer on repeat. I've tried a handful of thermometers over the years and this is my favorite.

Design Pick

  • I'm obsessed with the vibrant colors used by California based artist Kindah Khalidy. She just released her summer catalog of works and the good news is that my husband likes her stuff too so maybe someday (fingers crossed) we will own a piece. In the meantime maybe I opt for one of her custom designs for Vans

What I'm Reading

  • I'm switching gears this month and starting a book centered around economic policy; Squeezed: Why Our Families Can't Afford America. This is definitely an atypical choice for me but I heard the author recently speak on NPR and I was hooked. The rising cost of childcare and education are certainly top of mind and while my husband and I have favorable employee benefits I wanted to read about other families experiences.

What We're Reading the Kids

Instagram Handle

  • Do y'all follow @llideylikes? She lives in East Hampton and is in the assistant to Ina Garten (aka Barefoot Contessa). That alone should sway you to follow her but as much as I love Ina; Lidey puts a younger and perhaps a bit more approachable spin on life.

Guilty Pleasure

  • Does sleep count? Or going to the grocery store by myself? Because that's all I'm hoping for right now.

I Need A Vacation

  • Next month we're heading on our longest road trip to date and we're currently exploring different routes. I'm of the mindset that we should take a few stops along the way and enjoy different parts of the country. The Blue Ridge Mountains and the Old Edwards Inn in Highlands, North Carolina is exactly one of those spots. Charming and well appointed - this place is right up my alley! I wonder how they feel about kids?

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved -  With our recent strawberry picking adventure I wanted to take advantage of of the fresh berries so we tried two new recipes. Strawberry Fruit Leather and Strawberry Popsicles. Both recipes are easy to execute but do require a bit of waiting before tasting. If you haven't made homemade popsicles before they a great way to help fussy eaters get some fruit and/or vegetables in their diet without a lot of sugar. My kids love these fish themed popsicle molds.

Kate's Monthly Take - June 2018

May was a whirlwind...there were a great number of highs and lows. I'm looking forward to school and after-school activities wrapping up in the coming weeks. It will be so nice for life to slow down a bit and to be able to enjoy more time with family and friends. Summer is almost here!

  • In any given situation or moment really, it's easy for me to default to looking for what's wrong or what could be improved. My new intention is to recognize and experience each moment for what it is...a blessing.

Currently Coveting

  • I don't think it's a secret that I'm a fan of Cuyana. Their leather accessories and Panama Hat have been a part of my wardrobe for a few years now but I've never tried any of their clothes and I'm really into this Seersucker flounce top in Navy. It seems perfect for Summer and our above average temps!

Favorite Product

  • One of my closest friends has been educating herself on loads of beauty products, tools and treatments in the market in an effort to amp up her self care. Self care is so important and I'm not very good at this...I never workout and I'm lucky to wash my face at night but I'm trying to improve. She recently turned me onto this Jade Roller. I'd seen my fair share of people using them in InstaStories but it wasn't until I tried it myself that I was hooked. Use after applying serum or lotion and roll over your face in upward motions. It can help with absorption, skin tightening and circulation but most of all it feels wonderful. It's cooling and relaxing and has even helped with few headaches.

Design Pick

  • Ever since I lived in New York I've loved ABC Carpet & Home. One can easily get lost looking at a ll the treasures in that enchanting store. Shortly, after I lived there probably from one of my parents design magazines I discovered Madeline Weinrib who happens to be the grandaughter of the founder of ABC Carpet & Home. Madeline created the most amazing textiles and as I've always lived in a home with wood floors I love her cotton flatweave carpets. Unfortunately, in April Weinrib announced that she is closing her business to focus on new endeavors. As such she has drastically marked down her entire inventory. If you haven't had the chance don't forget to shop Madeline Weinrib's final online sale - there is just one week left!

What I'm Reading

  • I'm wrapping up The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin . An addicting page turner - I highly recommend! With the end of the school year I don't expect I will have much time to read as we settle into our summer routine but I'm excited to check out this Second Life podcast series because I often fantasize about a career change.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • We have a couple books on heavy rotation right now. Lucy is gearing up for her ballet recital so she is into the Twelve Dancing Princesses by Brigette Barrager. The illustrations are lovely and I too remember being mesmermized by this fairy tale as a child. George is obsessed with Cycle City by Alison Farrell in part because he has outgrown his balance bike and in part because of the Richard Scarry like detail of the illustrations. There is so much too look at in this book and he loves to examine all of the characters and their bikes. I also just picked up the board book,  Whose Boat? by Toni Buzzeo and Tom Froese which I'm really excited about because we were huge fans of Whose Truck? and Whose Tools?

Instagram Handle

  • Do y'all follow @leandramcohen? She is the founder of the cult favorite fashion blog Man Repeller and a recent mom to twin girls. She has a particularly open and direct sense of humor that I can't get enough of. Her recent InstaStories reference her award for "Shittiest Mother of the Day" because she used gift credit meant for her daughters to buy a fabulous pair of shoes for herself! I mean we've all thought about it, right? But no one talks about it!

Guilty Pleasure

  • We finally had the chance to visit a relatively new restaurant (Steingold's Deli) in our neighborhood and now I can't get enough of their sesame seed bagels and veggie cream cheese. I've always loved veggie cream cheese but Steingolds' adds dill to theirs and it is delicious - I am obsessed!

I Need A Vacation

  • As I've now crossed Charleston off my travel wish list (Charleston City Guide) I can now move Austin up to the top of my list. I'd love to stay at the fabulous  Hotel Saint Cecilia during my visit although I think I will plan to avoid the summer heat but if ya'll have Mexican food recommendations - please share.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved -  We eat a lot of soup in our house and I'm not a huge fan of eating hot soup during warmer months but snuck in this Chicken Tomatillo recipe from Salty Lashes right before the temps racheted up. We roasted on our own chicken to add but didn't have time to make homemade salsa verde and it still tasted delicious. A tangier soup than the kids are used to but they gobbled it up and some even drank the broth with a straw. Whatever works, right?

Kate's Monthly Take

March is my birthday month and for me has always been a time to hit reset. It's like those first two months of the year didn't necessarily go as planned so let's hit the "reset button" in March and get back on track. Time to organize, purge and get back to healthier habits. March is my reminder that I'm getting older and should try to be the best version of myself possible.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - March 2018

Mood

  • Hoping the old saying is true..."March comes in like a lion but goes out like a lamb"

Currently Coveting

  • It's been a long time since I've gone on a Girls Trip and I'm so excited to have one planned for May! I'm already daydreaming about a new outfit especially one that I can wear without getting spit up on. Recently, this striped halter jumpsuit has caught my eye. Would be so fun for cocktails paired with a brightly colored clutch, bold earrings and this Rainbow Brite stack of bracelets from Roxanne Assoulin.

Favorite Product

  • Finding time for a hair appointment is challenging to stay the least. Thankfully, my stylist introduced me to a new root touch-up product to help stretch the time in between! My three children are quickly giving my greys and this product is just what I needed. Retouch.Me by Kevin.Murphy REALLY works. I use it to cover my part line if I have an event or a meeting. It doesn't make a mess, is easy to use and it washes out in the shower! P.S. I use Dark Brown.

Design Pick

  • I'm a huge fan of the husband and wife team behind Pencil & Paper Co. I've been following Gen Sohr for a few years now after reading two articles about her in 2015. One in the now defunct Matchbook Magazine and one in Mini Magazine. I LOVE their style - it's classic with fun takes on color, fabric and texture. Some of their wallpaper pics are my favorite and they've made their picks so accessible on their website.

What I'm Reading

  • Technically, I haven't started yet but I'm so excited to read Kristin Hanna's new novel, The Great Alone. The Alaskan set book will be a vast departure from my last read based in war ridden Europe. I'm a huge fan of Hannah's since reading The Nightingalecoincidentally, also about WWII but seriously, if you haven't read it make it a priority. The Nightingale is easily one of my most favorite books from recent years.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • As soon as I saw there was a new Little Blue Truck companion book on the market I had to scoop it up. Little Blue Truck's Springtime is a new fave but we've also been loving The Odd One Out. This spotting book is so gorgeous and my son pours over the pictures and actually focuses until he finds what he is looking for.

Instagram Handle

  • I've been following @stacieflinner on her year-long around-the-world adventure and living vicariously through the beautiful photos she and her husband post.

Guilty Pleasure

  • I've been known to binge watch shows until the wee morning hours - I pay for it the next day but I truly get invested in the characters and need to know what happens yet. I recently watched the entire season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in two late night sessions. A guilty pleasure to be sure but this Golden Globe winning show has so much going for it - great sets, costumes, characters, an original story line and so much wit!

I Need A Vacation

  • Taking an African Safari is my dream vacation and since following @stacieflinner and her recent stay in Africa I've got more than a few items on my wish list...a journey through South Africa on Rovos Rail to start and a stay at a the Royal Chundu lodge in Zambia would do quite nicely. But let's face it, I know I'm dreaming.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - We tried Lasagna Soup for the first time thanks to a recommendation from my brother and we all loved it. We used this recipe from the Williams Sonoma blog - I really don't think you can ever go wrong with Ricotta or Basil!

Kate's Monthly Take

This past month has been crazy. We've all been sick, the house is a disaster and work is overwhelming. But no matter how crazy I feel my life has been I know someone else is having a harder time. I'm going to chose be grateful that we are all on the mend and give myself a break that this post is three days late. In fact, we should all give ourselves a break sometimes because we are just doing the best we can.

Enjoy my Monthly Take!

Kate's Monthly Take - February 2018

Mood

  • "It's Been a Long Week," Me in the middle of Tuesday (on repeat every dang week)

Currently Coveting

  • Each spring there is some item by Loeffler Randall that I NEED to have in my closet. I have a few pairs of shoes from past seasons that are so well worn the cost-per-use has to be down to a nickel at this point. This spring I am in LOVE with these striped Logan Sneakers. I mean they had me at the stripes...the tassels are like icing on the cake!

Favorite Product

  • It only took me having our third kid to splurge for this Baby Jogger Plush Hand Muff. It's made a world of difference this winter especially as our nanny or I fight the Chicago wind with our double stroller.

Design Pick

  • New Arrivals at Serena & Lily always have me swooning. Most of the time I end of wishing I lived in California or at least a milder climate where we could have windows and doors open 85% of the year. I would love to have an outdoor/indoor dining area where I could hang three of these fixtures at various heights. Or maybe I would chose to mix and match different pendants from their selection. The possibilities are endless.

What I'm Reading

  • My fascination with WWII and Holocaust literature started at a young age with Number the Stars and has grown with me as I have aged. This month I've been reading We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter. The character development is amazing and once your past the first 50 pages I promise you will stop referencing the Kurc Family Tree.

What We're Reading the Kids

  • If your children love a good trend and are into narwhals and unicorns then they will love this book! Not Quite Narwhal by Jessie Sima is perfect for young readers. It has adorable illustrations and weaves an important message seamlessly into the storyline.

Instagram Handle

  • I love to follow @valleybrinkroad, I discovered Barrett a little over three years ago when I was pregnant with George. She has this amazing lifestyle business in LA. Cultivating her gift boxes would basically be my dream job. Her recipes always have me craving fresh ingredients and pining for a trip to the West Coast. We've tried a few and you can check out one of her soups in the "Shit My Kids Will Eat" section below.

Guilty Pleasure

  • These Brach's Cherry Jube Jelly Hearts come out once a year and I can't get enough of them. I have already downed three bags virtually by myself. The dentist is going to be in for a real treat. I vow not to pick them up on my next Target run! Well...maybe just one more bag before Valentine's Day. Also, I'm not sure I want to know what Jube Jelly is...it sounds kind of disturbing.

I Need A Vacation

  • February is the perfect month to escape the Midwestern winter and get some Vitamin D. No such vacation is on the horizon this year, but if it was I would love to travel to Harbour Island in the Bahamas and stay at The Dunmore

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - We've never made Pasta e Fagioli before but this was soooo good and yes even my kids ate it! We used Chicken Stock and you can skip the fresh parsley if you don't have any on hand. I definitely topped mine off with a healthy portion of freshly shaved parmesan. The recipe quantity is perfect too - you won't be left with a huge pot of soup!

Kate's Monthly Take

It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone. I’m not one to make grandiose resolutions as I find I don’t keep them but 2017 was a stark reminder of how short life is and how fleeting good health can be so in 2018 I want to try and focus on being more present.

So what does being more present mean? How will I accomplish this? To me, being more present means cutting out the noise. Simplifying my life as much as possible and just trying to enjoy the time I have with friends and family.  This is not an easy task for me as I have an incredibly hard time focusing long enough to have a simple conversation. I'm convinced my mind often resembles my Chrome browser with 30 tabs open at once...so let's take this resolution one step at a time.

Tomorrow, I'll take my first step thanks to a six hour car ride. I’m going to take one hour and unsubscribe to countless marketing emails! It's going to feel liberating and I hope that this one hour of time will save me numerous hours in 2018. Hours I would have spent pouring over the latest products on sale that could have instead be spent with my family. Fingers crossed that both my bank account and family members thank me in the new year!

Whatever your resolution may or may not be I wish you luck and Happy New Year! Enjoy my first Monthly Take of 2018!

Kate's Monthly Take - January 2018

Mood

  • Can I make like a bear and hibernate until Spring? This weather is brutal and getting my kids out the door in all their winter apparel glory is exhausting!

Currently Coveting

  • I used to really want a Chloe saddle bag but with three kids I'm hopeful I'm becoming a bit more practical. I still love handbags but this adorable Herieth bag from Clare V is much more reasonably priced.

Favorite Product(s)

  • The weather has been frightful the past week and my lips have taken a beating but I’m loving the HONEST Beauty magic balm.

  • Our youngest got this highly rated toy Explore & More Follow Bee toy from Skip Hop for Christmas and I’m kind of obsessed. She’s infatuated by it and it’s supposed to help her learn to crawl - not that I want her crawling anytime soon!

Design Pick

  • I love the embroidery artwork designs of Rachel Castle. Her creations sell out fast on her site but custom orders are available. I definitely have one on my wish list!

What I'm Reading

  • Thanks to a recommendation from a friend I’m reading, "A Million Junes" by Emily Henry and it's incredibly addictive. I love an addictive book!

What We're Reading the Kids

  • After our epic Christmas Book Advent Calendar we are back to our regular nightly schedule learning all about Bugs and Beasts! The Big Book of Bugs and The Big Book of Beasts by Yuval Zommer are both beautifully illustrated, thoughtfully organized and contain the most fun tidbits of information about their subject matter.

Instagram Handle

  • So a couple years ago I discovered @gunnerandlux and the fabulous (Little Lux) jewelry designs created by 8 year old Riley. Her jewelry is adorable (big fan of the "Girl Gang" necklace) and her personality effortlessly shines through the Instagram account she shares with her dad. It is without a doubt one of my favorite feeds!

Guilty Pleasure

  • I can't get enough of The Crown on Netflix! I watched Season 2 so fast thanks to a sick baby sleeping on my chest but I may need to re-watch for another dose of all the costume and set grandeur.

I Need A Vacation

  • Temperatures in the Midwest have been just awful. Mexico and specifically the Rosewood Mayakoba resort is calling my name.

Shit My Kids Will Eat

  • Kid Tested & Approved - I’m not sure they really need anymore energy but I like the healthy ingredients in these and the kids devour these No-Bake Energy Bites from the blog Gimme Some Oven.
